FIRE CHIEF EMERITUS
FIRE CHIEF STEVEN MOODY

With over 54 years in the Fire & Emergency Services Industry, since 1969 and since 1983 took the reins of guiding as its Chief the busiest volunteer fire department in Suffolk, Virginia. Serving as a Commonwealth of Virginia State Firemen’s Association Delegate, Executive Board member for the Tidewaters Firefighter’s Association, and President of the Suffolk Virginia Fire Commission. He is a Commonwealth of Virginia and National Professional Qualifications Board Certified Firefighter II, Fire Instructor III and Hazardous Materials Incident Commander.

Alongside him was his wife Wendy, Son Steven, Daughter Crystal and now his 6 grandchildren. He is a longtime proud Master Mason. His leadership style is what would later be called "Moody Style of management". And his putting the “D” back in discipline was a recognizable solid area leadership standard approach. His approach as a leader was simple; Honesty, Integrity, Unwavering loyalty to service; demonstrating and leading by example for others to follow. He is a service trend setter and a hard charger. His command-and-control presence on and off the fireground was one that is hardly experienced by even today’s most experienced fireground tactical practitioners. He not only impacted how the service was to be provided for the citizens of his area but had an even broader brush stroke impact in other areas from Tidewater and to Richmond, Mountains of Shenandoah, the Northern tier of Virginia to even right here in the Lake Jericho Borough. This certainly was one that laid certain parts of the foundation of some of areas Fire Service leaders management style of today. He without concern of comfort and the popularity of opinion allowed for and led the way for the first successful First responder program and then ALS first responder program within the City of Suffolk, Virginia. He allowed the inception of the first coordinated successful Cadet Firefighter program in the area that yielded some of the most consummate, loyal professionals in the areas Fire Emergency Services today.

As our department was revitalizing, he was there to assist with sound advice, unrestricted resources and carde blanch support in all avenues to bring us where we are today. It was without question when our department family created this namesake award that it was obvious one name that should absolutely be a recipient. It is because of these and so many other attributes that the proud membership of the Lake Jericho Fire & Rescue awarded him the Fire Chief Emeritus Award.
